Who is Archangel Michael?
Michael is named in the Book of Daniel, the Letter of Jude and Revelation. Daniel calls him one of the chief princes and a protector of the people; Jude calls him an archangel; Revelation shows Michael and his angels confronting the dragon.
These texts shaped his best-known image: a protector who serves divine order rather than asserting power for its own sake. Later traditions added further roles that should be distinguished from the biblical accounts.
What does Michael's name mean?
Michael derives from the Hebrew Mîkhā’ēl and asks: ‘Who is like God?’ It points not to Michael being equal to God, but to the uniqueness of God.
Spiritually, the name can remind us that strength and humility belong together. True strength can act decisively without needing to dominate or diminish others.
Archangel Michael in the Bible
Daniel – the protecting prince
Daniel 10:13 calls Michael one of the chief princes; Daniel 10:21 describes him as the people's prince; Daniel 12:1 says that he stands for the people in a time of distress.
Jude – strength and humility
Jude 9 describes Michael disputing with the devil over the body of Moses, yet leaving judgement to the Lord. Several interpretations exist regarding the episode's background.
Revelation – the battle with the dragon
Revelation 12:7–9 describes war in heaven. Michael and his angels fight the dragon, whom the text identifies with the ancient serpent, the devil and Satan.
What do Michael's sword and the dragon symbolise?
In Christian art, Michael's sword or spear may symbolise decisive action for truth and the confrontation of evil. The dragon comes from Revelation and represents deception and evil.
Within ZOMYO, this struggle is not about defeating other people. It invites us to notice when our own strength loses its calm and begins to serve fear, anger or domination.
The teaching roots of ZOMYO
Beyond biblical texts, Christian, mystical, Kabbalistic and esoteric traditions have connected Michael with different qualities. These traditions do not form a single uniform system.
Psychiatrist, holistic teacher and author Nicholas C. Demetry studied directly with Daskalos—Stylianos Atteshlis, the Cypriot Christian mystic—from 1991 to 1994. In Demetry's spiritual interpretation, Michael is connected with courage, protection, truth, love, responsibility and conscious action.
These are interpretations from the teaching line of Daskalos and Demetry, not literal biblical statements. They are important roots of ZOMYO, but they do not replace its own system.
ZOMYO
Archangel Michael within ZOMYO
ZOMYO draws on spiritual traditions, books, teachers and Norbert Nagy's personal path of learning and experience. Norbert organised this knowledge into his own system of self-reflection, centred on the original binary code he created.
Michael and the quality of ONE
Within ZOMYO, Michael is connected with the number archetype ONE: beginning, initiative and personal agency. Its symbol is the point and its colour is red.
Balanced qualities
- confidence
- calm conviction
- personal strength
- self-awareness
- assertiveness
- initiative
When strength loses balance
In an inflated form it may appear as anger, judgement, blame, domination, stubbornness or aggression. In a depleted form it may appear as passivity, helplessness, dependence or procrastination. These are reflective prompts, not diagnoses or fixed labels.
Questions for self-reflection
- Where do I need to take one clear first step?
- When is my strength calm, and when does it become anger or control?
- How could I stand up for myself without diminishing others?
- What decision am I postponing although I already know the next step?
